Class Information
The CIA™ course runs Monday-Thursday, 8 am - 5 pm with an hour break for lunch. Recommended: 2-3 hours of independent study each evening.
The class includes lecture, slides, videos, and opportunity for questions. All necessary materials are provided. There will be a written exam on the last day, and it is necessary to pass the exam (70% is a passing grade) in order to receive your CIA certification.

DAY ONE
- Birth of jewelry insurance, history of insurance from its ancient origins
- Insurance basics, such as how insurance companies operate
- What risks may be insured, how risks are limited, and the roles of agents, underwriters and claims adjusters
- Insurance regulation, public policy and indemnification
- Standard fire policy
- Standard homeowner's policy
DAY TWO
- Scheduled jewelry
- Personal articles floater
- Jewelry insurance specifics, including premiums and losses, valuation, property insured, perils, policy period, and loss settlement and payment options
- Agency and insurance company underwriting, guidelines, and verification of values
DAY THREE
- Jewelry insurance appraisal--its definition and purpose for insurance
- Gem labs and standards, use of the GIA grading system
- Role of the jeweler/appraiser, and the insurance company-appraiser relationship
- Need for standardization
- Government involvement
